My capstone project is a documentary I created about capstone. I interviewed seniors from Sport and Medical Sciences academy and grabbed artifacts from their events and field work. I’ve also created most of the music used in the documentary and I edited all of it on my own.
In the beginning of the school year I knew I wanted to do a project that involved a documentary. My first idea was to make a documentary about children with cancer to dedicate to my friend that passed away in 2011. I even wrote a lot of the script and questions for it, but I came to the conclusion during the summer that it would be a lot harder to actually make it, so unfortunately I had to think of something else. I wanted to make a documentary that actually meant something to me which has been my biggest struggle creating this documentary for capstone.
My capstone teacher helped push me to pursue the documentary and do it about capstone. At first I thought okay maybe it won't be so hard and I'll enjoy it. Early on in the year I realized how unmotivated I was to make a documentary about capstone, I had no emotional attachment to it. I don't feel like I'm actually doing any good to the community. For capstone I really wanted to do something that meant a lot to me, the only attachment I have to this project is that it´s my first documentary and I get to produce my own music. I realized I wasn´t making a difference to the community when I attended others capstone events and was emotionally touched by theirs but haven´t felt that same connection to mine. I still struggle finishing the project in late March because I rather find something else to do a documentary about and start all over than push through and finish this project.
Even though there are things I don't like about the project, there is still good that comes from it. I’ve gotten the opportunity to see other people’s capstone that I feel I can connect with and made me happy to see my peers doing good for the community. This project has also helped guide me in what I would like to do after high school involving documentaries. After completing the research paper I learned a lot about how to create a documentary and how to add my own style to it.
Capstone has taught me that I can’t let procrastination get the best of me especially for a big project like this. I still want to make a good quality documentary even if I’m not fully invested in this project. I see this project as a life lesson, it has taught me time management, motivation, goals to meet weekly, how to multitask. I’ve learned so much from capstone and even through the stress and headaches, I’m glad I went through an experience like this.
