The connection to my research paper is learning how to successfully make a documentary. The interviewing process to me can be one of the hardest parts of the documentary right next to editing the actual film. The process of interviewing in my experience is tedious especially being the only one controlling everything. The setup process on my own takes up to 15 minutes, setting up the background, lighting, audio, camera, and the person I'm interviewing.
The biggest part to a documentary is the interview. Being an independent filmmaker can be the hardest part. There’s multiple thing you have to pay attention to and get set up on your own. The questions asked and the answers are going to dictate how the whole documentary will turn out. The movie is based off of the interview, it is used as the narration. Jourdan Aldredge explained how to get a good interview out of the person, “The art of interviewing can be a little awkward or intimidating at first. The goal of a good interviewer is to put your subject at ease and invite them into a dialogue.” (Aldredge, 2016). When interviewing someone it is important to make sure that they are comfortable, listened to and feel heard. During an interview it should be a conversation not just rapid fire questions. There will not be desirable results from only having the participant answer the questions and not giving any feedback to what they are saying. They will start to feel more like a subject than a person in the documentary. “Any question that is not open ended gives them a quick escape and nothing for you to use.” (Aldredge, 2016). Asking a yes or no question won’t give any good answers. The interview should flow with the rest of the documentary. When making a documentary each answer to a question should tell a story, there should be in depth answers that will give feeling and character to the documentary. The interview is the whole structure of the documentary, it is the narration of the documentary from the start to the end of the film.
This research has helped me once I started interviewing seniors about their capstone. When interviewing students I´ve been trying to get better at having a conversation instead of rapid constant questions. While listening to them I find myself intrigued and wanting to ask more questions.
